The battle between the various merits of Blogger and Radio Userland continue. Blogger has a spell checker under pro, as well as the image management. Radio Userland allows cateogories. Now, what I want is something that is partly a log on the main page, but those main page articles can be stored in sub-sections, not by date, but by title.
The idea being that The Cesspit becomes a link repository of sorts, which was and still is it's main aim. Just the maintenance of such a site is a pain in the posterior.

I see no reason why it can't be done, just I can't find the tool to do it. Both Blogger and Radio Userland have everything there, more or less (I'd probably have to find and tack on proper image/photo album tool) but they sort by date.... it's a little arbitary and a tweak for an option to sort by title, and Bob's yer Uncle. Okay, the archiving would have to be changed as well. Am I asking to much?

Welcome to World's Dullest Blog.

Success. I don't know how, but I've managed to get Blogger talking to rudram.org via ftp. Now I got to work out which is the one for me. Blogger or Radio Userland.

Place bets now....
I've worked out most the settings on Radio Userland. It's going to take me a good few hours work to get everything how I want it, but once set up, I think it is the solution I'm looking for. Of course, where does that put Blogger? Here still. I might still find that it's interface is nicer, and I'd still like to get it to work with FTP uploads. And blogger has the advantage of write anywhere... which might just edge it.

You can check the latest Radio Userland pages at The Cesspit.

Well, last night I download Radio Userland last night and put it on my home PC. The templating isn't as simple to edit, but the system looks to be more powerful. That might be featurism though, rather than anything useful. I'll have to see. It did easily allow uploading to my own site though, something I can't convince Blogger to do.

What would be useful would be the ability to archive by subject as well as date, so added entries could be hung under a variety of different sub-menu's... or perhaps I want something far to close to a 'proper' content management system that'll set me back $900 or more. We'll see.

In the meantime, I'll use this, if just to get some content written for my own site.

Oh, the Weblog community. I too can be part of it. Though this is just a test really to see what I can and can't do with 'Blogger'. I'm trying to find some software that will allow me to manage my own website in a certain way, and though Blogger isn't that product, I think the log/archive will work well for one part of 'The Cesspit'. If I can work out how on earth to get these published pages FTP'd into my own site. For some reason it rejects the password, which I know is good. I have a horrible feeling that there's some issues with special characters needing to be quoted. I hope not, as it seems to be a bit an oversight to not allow normal keyboard entry as your password... I'll have to play a little bit.

For now, the process starts with editing a few template variables, and trying out different layouts. I can see how this is useful, and almost the means is as interesting as the ends. I'm not quite sure how all the Archiving Works, and it's obvious I need the upgrades (hey, they gotta make a few quid) to get the most out of this system, but it's a start. Actually, I suspect with some jiggery pokery and Dreamweaver, you could pretty much implement my entire website (The Cesspit) with Blogger, and not have the annoyance of the maintenance... which is the bit I hate.

Right, must do some work. Real work.
